Reality TV star and media personality Uriel Oputa has shared her thoughts on why many beautiful, successful Nigerian women remain single well into their 30s and 40s — and her comments are sparking conversations online.
Speaking in a recent interview on Outside the Box, Uriel addressed the growing struggle many women face when it comes to finding genuinely decent partners in Nigeria.
“You’ll see a woman in Nigeria now, she’s 35, some of them are even 40, 41. They’re still single — fine fine girls, but they’re still single. Why? Ogini? It’s hard to find a decent man in Nigeria and it boils down to what? We have a culture of ‘there is always something better.’ There’s nothing better,” she said.
Uriel also mentioned her admiration for music mogul Don Jazzy, who recently admitted he struggles to stay committed to one woman — a mindset Uriel says reflects the dating culture she’s talking about.
Her candid take has struck a chord with many Nigerians, especially women who see their own experiences reflected in her words.
Social media reactions have been pouring in:
@_OnosOnos: “The reason they’re single isn’t lack of decent men, it’s just that the men they want aren’t enough to go round, which is why polygamy should come in.”
@abazwhyllzz: “Her definition of a decent man is a rich man, nobody wan marry broke and funny boys like me.”
@tsetseSBM: “Honestly, what Uriel said is valid. A lot of women in Nigeria are single not because they don’t want love, but because it’s hard to find emotionally mature, honest, and secure men. Nigerian men want submission, but they don’t offer stability. They want peace, yet they bring chaos. You can’t keep failing as a partner and still expect women to settle.”
Uriel’s comments have reignited debates about modern relationships, gender expectations, and the realities of dating in Nigeria today.
