Grammy-nominated Afrobeat star Made Kuti has shared his thoughts on excessive materialism, questioning why some people feel the need to own multiple cars.
In a recent interview with Pulse, Kuti admitted he finds it baffling when individuals boast about having seven or eight vehicles, describing the habit as unnecessary and wasteful.
“For example, how many cars do you need to drive? I genuinely don’t understand why you need 7, 8 cars. They are depreciating assets. In the next couple of years, they will depreciate,” he said.
Kuti explained that his perspective is rooted in his upbringing. Raised in a family that emphasized purpose and values over material possessions, he learned early on to invest his time and money in things that matter — not just flashy symbols of wealth.
“I’m the kind of person who just does what he wants. Maybe my dad was very clever with how he raised us. But the school of thought is, I don’t care much about materialistic things.”
While he acknowledged that collecting cars might bring joy to some, it simply isn’t a lifestyle that makes sense to him.
