Nollywood actor and podcast host Tobi Makinde has opened up about the huge impact Funke Akindele, award-winning actress and filmmaker, has had on his life and career.
In a recent interview with Sunday Scoop, Makinde revealed that working with Akindele on blockbuster projects like A Tribe Called Judah and Everybody Loves Jenifa marked a turning point for him, both professionally and personally.
“The first time I worked with Funke, I knew I was standing on holy ground when it came to excellence,” he shared. “She’s not just talented; she’s intentional, focused, and relentless in the best way. I watched her run massive productions with calm control, then step in front of the camera and give 110 percent. That level of dedication rubs off on you. It forces you to rise to the occasion.”
A Masterclass in Excellence
Makinde described the experience of working with Funke Akindele as a “masterclass” in more than just acting.
“Working with her changed how I approach everything,” he said. “It’s not just about performing. It’s about how you carry yourself as a creative, how you lead, and how you deliver value.”
Makinde, who began acting as a child in shows like Kamsi and Neighbours, also shared a touching fan moment that reminded him of the true power of storytelling.
“There was a day I’ll never forget. I was out in public when a young woman saw me and just froze. She was so emotional and said, ‘Your work helped me through a really hard time.’ In that moment, I realized it’s not just acting or being on screen—it’s about impact. You never know who’s watching or who’s healing because of a story you told.”
Branching into Podcasting
Now, Makinde is exploring new ways to connect with audiences through The Tobi Makinde Show, his podcast where he says the raw, unscripted nature of the conversations has deepened his love for authentic storytelling.
“In film, there’s a script. You know your lines. But on the podcast, it’s just me, my guest, and the truth.”
Funke Akindele, often celebrated for her transformative impact on young Nollywood stars, has once again proven that her legacy goes far beyond the screen.
