Afrobeats star Michael Adebayo Olayinka, popularly known as Ruger, has shared candid insights about the realities of navigating Nigeria’s music industry, describing it as a space driven by business rather than genuine relationships.

Speaking during a recent interview on The Stanley Agu Show, Ruger revealed that authentic friendships among artists are extremely rare. He reflected on his journey and what he has come to understand about the industry dynamics.

“One thing I wish I had known earlier is that no one is truly your friend in the industry,” Ruger said. “At most, you might have one or two genuine people who stick with you through thick and thin, who want to see you grow and will check on you even when things aren’t going well.”

He emphasized that most connections in the music space are transactional, with loyalty often tied to what one can offer at any given moment.

“Everything is business. Nobody really cares. People associate with you based on what you bring to the table. The moment that value fades, many will disappear. So, at best, you might find one, two, or even no real friends.”

Ruger’s remarks offer a sobering look into the emotional and social challenges many artists face behind the glamour of the spotlight.

This isn’t the first time Ruger has spoken openly about personal values and lessons. In a separate interview, he once shared that he donated his first earnings from music to his church, highlighting his humble beginnings and spiritual grounding.
