With over a decade of experience in Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, Mariam Olaide Adeyiga has shared her candid experiences navigating Nollywood as a woman. From her early days on stage to producing culturally significant films, her journey has been both inspiring and filled with challenges.
In a recent interview with The Nation, Adeyiga spoke openly about the gender-specific obstacles she has faced.
“There’s no denying the difficulties—gender stereotypes, being typecast, the invisible emotional burden, and the pressure to compromise just to get ahead,” she revealed.
She added, “Over time, I’ve learned to stick to my principles, say no to anything that doesn’t feel right, and surround myself with people who genuinely value my work.”
Despite the challenges, Adeyiga acknowledged that change is happening in the industry.
“The landscape is evolving. More women are stepping into roles as directors, producers, and decision-makers. It’s empowering to witness and be part of that progress,” she said.
Since launching her professional acting career in 2013, Adeyiga’s passion for storytelling has remained her greatest motivation.
“Acting gives me the chance to live many lives and tell stories that often go untold. When people tell me that a role I played helped them heal or brought them joy, it reminds me how meaningful this work truly is,” she shared.
